Rare engraved and acid-etched, patinated and polychromed bronze, pewter and enamel "Eternal Forest" Coffee table by Philip & Kelvin Laverne
Rare engraved and acid-etched, patinated and polychromed bronze, pewter and enamel "Eternal Forest" Coffee table by Philip & Kelvin Laverne . The beautiful decorated and patinated top is resting on a four sided concave patinated brass plinth base. Etched signature to top "Philip + Kelvin Laverne". USA : circa 1960 Philip (1907-1987) and Kelvin (b. 1937) LaVerne were a New York-based father and son collaborative duo best known for their use of innovative metalworking techniques to produce custom-made, limited editioned furniture which integrated art and design. Born in New York City, Philip LaVerne studied under Ashcan School painter John Sloan at the Arts Students League of New York. Kelvin LaVerne, also born in New York, pursued metal sculpting and furniture design at the Parsons School of Design and, like his father, studied at the Arts Students League as well. In the late fifties, the two began collaborating, eventually opening a showroom on East 57th Street in Manhattan. Working primarily in pewter and bronze, Philip’s role concentrated on the materials and decorative elements, while Kelvin focused on the overall form and functionality. Combining modern and traditional designs, their subjects centered mostly around historical civilizations, mythology, and chinoiserie, later gravitating towards more abstracted works. Patterns range from the figural, like “Chan”, “Ming” and “Festival” to the abstract, such as “Eternal Forest”, “Viola” and “Etruscan”. Since Philip’s death in 1987, Kelvin has ceased production of their famed Historical Series, however, he still creates pieces under both their names to this day.

Pair of "Niagara" Walnut Armchairs by Maurice Dufrène
Pair of "Niagara" walnut armchairs by Maurice Dufrène with stepped front uprights forming a waterfall motif. The "Niagara" armchair, designed by Maurice Dufrène (1876–1955) circa 1929, is one of the most emblematic models of French Art Deco period. The stepped front uprights, evoking a stylized waterfall, as well as the lateral grooves adorned with stems and scrolls, reflect the search for a subtle balance between decoration and structure, typical of the Art Deco style . Lucien GIBERT (1904-1988) Patinated Bronze Sculpture of Standing Woman
Green patinated bronze of a standing nude woman by Lucien Gibert Lucien Gibert (1904-1988) was a French sculptor. He began his artistic training in his father's cabinetmaking workshop. He first entered the School of Fine Arts in his hometown of Saint-Étienne, then studied under Jean Boucher at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Gibert, however, preferred to work independently under the guidance of Charles Despiau, who directed his efforts toward a less conventional style. Heavily influenced by Aristide Maillol, Gibert initially practiced direct carving in wood and stone. He received a gold medal in 1937 at the Paris International Exposition. Awarded a prize and scholarship by French Equatorial Africa in 1948, he traveled first to Algeria, then to sub-Saharan Africa, bringing back sketches and photographs that inspired numerous sculptures, which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1950. Gibert completed numerous commissions for the French State, such as Young Girl from the South, exhibited at the Montpellier Museum, Algerian Dancer for the Museum of Overseas France, and Offering, Woman in Stockings, Maternity, etc., for the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris. He also designed more than two hundred medals for the Paris Mint, an institution of which he was the director. Signed "GIBERT"; Numbered "EA 3"; Lost-wax foundry mark: Serralherio France: circa 1940
