Rare and Early Art Deco shagreen black lacquered giltwood stool Attributed Pierre Legrain
Rare and early Art Deco shagreen black lacquered giltwood stool in the Africanist style attributed Pierre Legrain. Similar model located at the Virginia Museum of fine Arts and Brooklyn Museum.France: circa 1925 Provenance: former private collection Elaine Vinci Leoni-Corradini Pierre Legrain was introduced to bookbinding when Jacques Doucet, couturier and great art collector, took the young artist under his wing as an employee and assigned him the task of binding his collection of books. Pierre Legrain then sets up his workshop in the patron's apartments Jacques Doucet wishes to harmonize the decoration of his apartment with his art collections, and this is how the collaboration with Pierre Legrain was oriented towards the creation of exceptional furniture that mixes influences of cubism and a African art particularly prized by the couturier. Jacques Doucet's apartment is conceived as a real staging, a setting that is itself a work of art. In this period of the early 20s, Pierre Legrain met Jeanne Tachard, friend of Jacques Doucet, whose collection of African art inspired the creator. She will, following Jacques Doucet, ask Pierre Legrain for the total development of his villa in the manner, also, of a total work of art, spaces, furniture, objects, lighting and garden which will become emblematic. literature:literature: Art Deco Furniture, Duncan, pg. 133, no. 144

Rare Dinanderie Charger in Patinated Copper and Nickel Silver by Jean Dunand
Rare octogonal dinanderie charger in patinated copper and nickel silver by Jean Dunand. Signed incised: Jean Dunand. France: circa 1925 Provenance : Private collection Chicago At the age of just nineteen, Jean Dunand (1877-1942) began garnering attention in the Swiss art scene. Thanks to the sale of figurative sculptures that he had created in 1896, he succeeded in winning a scholarship from the city of Geneva which allowed him to study sculpture under Jean Dampt at the École National des arts décoratifs in Paris. With this training, he won a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle de Paris for his work Quo Vadis and beginning in 1902 his sculptures entered into the collections of Swiss museums. Despite such encouraging beginnings, Dunand soon realized that the medium of the sculptor did not suit him and that gaining notoriety as an artist required innovation. He therefore decided, while continuing to present his sculptures at the Paris salons, to exhibit his works in dinanderie, a technique he had learned at the end of the 1890s from Auguste Dannhauer, a Genevese coppersmith. Encouraged by the public’s interest in these works at the 1904 Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Dunand decided to abandon sculpture, resolutely turning his attention to the decorative arts, encouraged by his mentor Jean Dampt who always contended that an artist must above all be a craftsman. His vases, boxes and coupes were unanimously praised by the critics and one of his gold-inlaid vases was even acquired by the Union centrale des arts décoratifs de Paris in 1905. Refusing the use of machines to give form to his creations, Dunand used a boxwood mallet to raise sheets of copper, brass, or maillechort from the interior. From a flat sheet, he succeeded in arriving at forms in high relief, entirely hammered in small successive blows like a sculptor, in order to achieve the shape of the desired object. In the beginning, he created simple forms that allowed him to highlight his technique, torch-fired patinas, and precious-metal inlays.

Important Empire Mahogany Console Attributed to Jacob Frères
Important Empire Mahogany Console Attributed to Jacob Frères. with frieze with griffins, foliate scrolls, bosses and palmettes on tapering turned legs headed by winged bronze masks.France:circa 1810 Provenance: B & L Wahlström, Stockholm. previously from the Ströms slott is a manor house in the parish of Hjärtum in the municipality of Lilla Edet The estate remained in the Evers family until 1893 when the business went bankrupt and Ström was sold on in a couple of rounds, including in the 1940s to Ströms Trämasse Fabriks aktiebolag (later Inlands Pappersbruk ). The castle was then allowed to function as official residences and manager's residence for the mill until the 1980s. Inlands Pappersbruk divided the estate into smaller farms in 1913–1916 and sold these to around twenty home builders. Until this time, Ström's estate was the largest landed property in Bohus County. The owners included land areas from Hisingen in the south to the Norwegian border in the north. The mill sold Ström to the municipality of Lilla Edets in 1984. The municipality divided the buildings for resale, but kept most of the park and garden. The then owner began an extensive renovation to use the building for conference and restaurant operations, but had financial problems and the company was declared bankrupt in 1990 and was then sold to Thorsten Sennton. Restaurant operations resumed in 1995, but Ström was sold again at executive auction in 2005 to new owners who only two years later in 2007 sold on to current owners Henrik and Magnus Olsson. Today, the owners have refurnished the then run-down manor house environment, which had been empty, unheated and exposed to vandalism for several years. The manor is used for, among other things, pre-school activities, rental apartments and as a venue for various conferences.
