Art Deco Period Ceramic Vase by Jean Mayodon
French Art Deco ceramic vase by Jean Mayodon, the brown glazed finish showing a representation of Bacchante. France: circa 1925. Artist's cipher to underside. Provenance: Seymour Stein Collection. One of the foremost French Art Deco ceramicists, Jean Mayodon was initially trained as an interior decorator and painter but by the age of twenty had turned to ceramics. Setting up a workshop in his hometown of Sèvres, Mayodon quickly gained recognition. He presented his ceramics for the first time in 1919 at the Musée Galliera which led to a solo exhibition two years later. He collaborated with Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann at the extraordinarily influential 1925 World's Fair in Paris, the Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Moderne and his work was also included in the Parisian Salons des Artistes Décorateurs of 1928 and 1932, a primary forum for young designers. Throughout his successful career Mayodon participated in numerous international exhibitions. So celebrated were Mayodon's ceramics that from 1934-39 he served as an artistic adviser at the foremost porcelain company, Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres and from 1941-42 was the artistic director. In addition to Ruhlmann, he collaborated with other preeminent designers and architects of the day including, Eugene Printz, Jules Leleu, and Raymond Subes.

Glazed Ceramic Vase by René Buthaud
Glazed ceramic vase by René Buthaud depicting nude dancers. Glazed signature to underside ‘RB’. France: circa 1935 Literature: Céramiques de René Buthaud, Buthaud and Du Pasquier, pg. 130 Provenance: Collection of Seymour Stein. Following a brief stint as an engraver for the French army during WWI, he returned to Bordeaux where his artist friends Jean Dupas and Roger Bissière encouraged him to try his hand at ceramics. In 1919 and 1920 he exhibited his new wares at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in Paris, where his work achieved critical acclaim. Among his buyers was the famed artist Jean Dunand, who was so impressed by Buthaud’s work that he nominated him for the first Florence Blumenthal Prize, which went to Buthaud in 1921. He settled in Bordeaux in 1925, where he would spend his entire life in continual experimentation and growth, branching out further into ceramics and eventually working with glass as well. The subsequent decades were filled with a multitude of achievements including: jurying the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925, directing the Primavera Pottery from 1923 through 1926, exhibiting at galleries Druet and George Rouard, becoming a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1937, an officer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1983, and receiving the French National Order of Merit in 1986, mere months before his death. He left behind an enormous and impressive body of work encompassing drawings, paintings, verre églomisé panels, and ceramics, all bearing the hallmarks of his unique style: a combination of classicism and modernism with dashes of Cubism, the Italian Renaissance, and influences of the African tribal art he collected.

Steel Cinetic Object "Tetracono SM" by Bruno Munari for Danese Milano
Steel and Aluminium Cinetic Object "Tetracono SM" by Bruno Munari for Danese Milano. Paper manufacturer's label to underside ‘Bruno Munari 1965 Tetracono S.M. cinquanta esemplari numerati e firmati esemplare n. 28 Munari Edizioni Danese Milano’. This work is number 18 from the edition of 50. This kinetic sculpture is comprised of four rotating cones which alternate between green and red. Italy: circa 1965 the object was originally intended by danese milano as an artist's multiple, to circulate at a price closer to a consumer product. it was intended to be industrially manufactured. turns out neither of these ws true in the end. the first version had motors to turn the cones and it was a resounding technical flop. this second version without motors was motivated by an exhibition in amsterdam at tghe stedlijk museum. 50 copies were made, but they were not really at an industrial scale. basically, some guy in one of munari's students' studios who knew how to operate a lathe produced the series. Walnut Venereed Bar Cabinet by Paolo Buffa
Mahogany and Sycomore Bar Cabinet by Paolo Buffa decorated with fencing scenes. Interior fitted with four movable shelves Italy: circa 1950 Provenance: Blackman Cruz, Los Angeles | Private Collection. Paolo Buffa's debut in the world of design takes place at the end of the 1920s in the studio of Gio Ponti and Emilio Lancia, immersing himself in an atmosphere committed to the reinterpretation of the Lombard classicism and Milanese architecture. In the early 1930s, he founded his own practice. While professionally dedicated to the construction of architectural works, especially housing and private villas and venturing further into complex residential buildings, Buffa was expecially passionate about furtniture and product design, an area where he remained faithful to a figurative repertoire of substantial classicism, while not disdaining impulses of authentic modernity, ranging from different eras and styles, which would become an inexhaustible source of inspiration over time. His pieces are manufactured today by cabinet maker Eredi Marelli, the evolution of an original artisanal workshop founded in 1934 in Cantù, the heart of the famous furniture-making district by Milan.
