Cast Stone Sculpture of Nude with Cat by William Zorach
Cast stone Sculpture of Nude with Cat by William Zorach Incised signature near base '©WZ Zorach William Zorach' with publisher's mark. This work is from the edition published by Robinson Galleries, New York. USA : circa 1940 Zorach is a classic American success story. He emigrated from Lithuania to the United States as a young child and studied art in New York, and then Paris in the early 1900s. He was regarded as a founder of the early American modernist movement, first as a painter painting in a Fauvist and later a Cubist style. Whatever his success as an oil painter, Bill found that he was more drawn to sculpting and to painting with watercolors. He taught himself to sculpt, not only modeling works but also developing the kind of sculpture style known as direct carving. His work can be found in public installations and in the permanent collections of both preeminent and smaller museums throughout the country.

Polychrome Screen print "Romanesque" by Josef Zenk
Polychrome Screen print "Romanesque" by Josef Zenk Signed, titled and numbered to lower edge ‘Romanesque 1/24 Zenk’. This work is number 1 from the edition of 24. Zenk studied for three years at the National Academy of Design, followed by further studies at the Art Students League in New York. In 1927 and 1928, organized exhibitions with many of the leading American painters, including Edward Hopper, Charles Sheeler, and Ernest Fiene. In 1930 he was granted a full scholarship to study at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute in Utica, While there, an exhibition of his work produced the greatest attendance of any show at the institution of that year. In 1942, “Zuni” by Zenk became the first work purchased by the Munson Williams Proctor Institute for its Central New York Artists Collection. Along with Louis Schanker, a prominent woodcut artist and teacher at the New School, Zenk and a small group of printmakers formed “Studio 74” for the purpose of exhibiting their color woodblock prints. The group received immediate critical attention. The New York Times described the work of Josef Zenk as “particularly admirable”. One of his prints, “The Kiss”, was chosen in 1949 as one of the “best prints of the year” and was exhibited in the National Exhibition of Prints held at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. Josef Zenk’s works have been shown in over twenty-seven museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Newark Museum, the Seattle Museum of Art, and the National Academy of Design. Through the many exhibitions during his career, Zenk progressed from stylized realism in landscape and figurative painting to a powerful modernist and abstract style

Rare Pair of Veneered Crimson Laminated fabric Cabinets by Maxime Old
Pair of modernist veneered crimson laminated fabric cabinets by Maxime Old , resting on brushed steel bases. Each cabinet features a flip-top compartment concealing storage above a drop-front door concealing storage with three non-adjustable shelves and three drawers. France: circa 1958 Provenance: Commissioned for Dr. R., Rouen, France in 1958. Yves Gastou, Paris. Private Collection Chicago. Literature: Maxime Old: Architecte-Décorateur, Badetz, pg. 228 illustrating the cabinets. Old joined the renowned designer and decorator Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann, and worked with him until 1934. His time with Ruhlmann taught him much about luxury and fine design, but his esthetic was different from that of his mentor, and the designs that he subsequently went on to produce are very distinctly his own. Old’s furniture was sleek and modern, usually devoid of surface embellishments, and very pure and sculptural. His work was, in many ways, ahead of his time. He was very concerned with functionalism – the pieces should suit their purpose flawlessly, and be comfortable – after all – comfort is, indeed, a luxury. He added luxury to his pieces by using rare and costly woods, but he also made use of more accessible woods, such as oak, cherry, ash and walnut. His esthetic was for furniture with perfect proportions, clean, elegant lines, often subtly angled, and perhaps enhanced with bronze accents or fittings.
